Atmosphere of Peace

I attended the Atlanta Black Expo this year and I met some amazing writers but their was one in particular that stood out to me. I knew that I wanted to know her story and she was kind enough to accept my interview. Her name is Rava Shelyn and the name of her book is Gin,Chittlins &Blessings. She has a great story and a beautiful spirit I hope you all will be as blessed as I was to met and speak with her.

Ravá Shelyn Author, Poet, and Philanthropist tells the story of love and pain – of her African American experience. This woman of the west is a Colorado native who grew up in the Northern Park Hill area of Denver. At a very early age, she began telling the stories of her classmates and childhood friends (none of which are included in her present day works). Yet, one thing was and still is clear – her mission, predestined at conception to tell stories and create art through written words.

Please visit her website at http://ravashelyn.com/index.html

1. What is your motivation for writing?
RS: My motivation for writing has always been sanity. I write to make sense of it all . of this life pain and happiness. You have to understand what I am feeling inside and my job as a writer is to make you understand. I am really inquisitive (which is a polite way of saying noisy) and I want to understand myself and others around me so I pay attention. In my paying attention I pick up on all the beautiful and ugliness of life. Writing is really an art form and art reflects life, yet art influences life. So there we have it. That’s what motivates me, life.

2. Where did get the name Gin, Chittlins and blessings from?
RS: Gin, Chittlins and Blessing are copying methods. During Christmas and New Years enslaved African Americans were encouraged and forced to drink among other things. But the drinking of alcohol was to associate being in a drunken state with freedom. If a person drinks enough the next day is not too pretty. Thus, the psychological dependency of African Americans became strengthen. But what Gin represented is our willingness to numb our selves from the reality, yet we must one day face; same thing with Chittlins or food. Chittlins are pig intestines and once upon a time they were thrown out with other scraps but ended up in many of pots. As women we tend to want to make things better and the only thing some of our mothers had was a kitchen and a few scraps, mix that with love and do you have. A down home cooked meal or soul food. During the enslavement of our four parents so to speak, some things had to be done to survive. The diet of many African Americans is known to be deadly but yet we are still so attached to certain foods that we know are killing us. I am not telling anymore what to eat or what to not eat. Yet, the consumption of starch and meat only diet is numbing on some level. I will make the bold statement of saying substance abuse and compulsive eating is killing our community. And then there are our Blessings. Regardless of the different religious beliefs practiced in our community, spirituality is a big deal. It influences our every day life from how we love and care for each other to how we sing or hum while cooking. However, we have allowed it to divide, reject or isolate ourselves and each other. I do not have an opinion of the title as positive or negative. Maybe it’s both or neither. It’s what it is.

3. Who are your writter and Natural hair inspirations?
RS: I admire bold statements. I remember when I was a young girl making a consciences decision not to fit in with everyone else. When I got to high school I did exactly that but I came back into myself. I am really inspired by people who are marginalized by their willingness not to conform to societies mandates, if that makes any sense. I love Eryah Badu because she doesn’t give a damn; I love writers who leave their love because he or she doesn’t like something they wrote. The people that fight tooth and nail for what they believe and to attain true liberation are the people like to keep in company, the Artist, the intellectual, the hustler and the lover.

4. What has been your challenge as a writter?
RS: before you put out a book, you’re not really sure if you are a good writer or not. So I went through this period of searching for validation. My greatest challenge was to believe in my art. I mean really believe in it. Believe its worth being in a physical form as a book because it could still be an idea or a concept in my head. So I had to take some time and get clear that yeah Gin, Chittlins & Blessings is a dope book and its going to be for someone, what Home girls and Hand grenades was for me.

5. What encouraging words do you have for new writters?
RS: New Authors listen no one will promote you like you. Writing was easy because it’s what comes naturally to you but the business side you have to be on point. Take your time and do it right. And write everyday no matter what.

6. Why is writing your divine path as you stated in your blog?
RS: It’s important for everyone to find their divine purpose in life. The very thing you were born to do. Hollywood would have you thinking you need to be an actor or rapper or someone that fits their script. Then we would all be acting rapping and singing and no body will teach the babies or nurse the sick people. A team works when everyone plays their own position and 85 south is relatively safe when everyone stays in their own lane. I feel so powerful and connected and disconnected all at the same time when I am writing. Its funny sometimes I read the things I write and I say to myself damn I wrote that. Which sounds pompous as all out doors but I am really taken back because I may not remember writing something that I later find dope. It’s what people call being in the zone, I guess.

7. I loved what you said about never placing your dreams aside For the sake of security can you elaborate on that?
RS: In May I decided to quit my job and move to Atlanta, get my own place and write for a living. I meet so many people who worked twenty or thirty years at a job that they absolutely hate. I don’t intent on using my divine energy on something I hate. I understand that sometime you got to do- what you got to do- to get that money and go ahead baby. But for me I am going to dream and when I feel like making a move. I mean really feel it in my heart and soul then I going to do it with out looking back. This summer I saw a lot of grasshoppers I don’t know if it was because I was just paying more attention to grasshoppers this year. But the thing with grasshoppers they can only jump in one direction forward, they don’t think oh this spots really nice I think I’ll stay here for ever. No they explore the world before them taking changes with every hop.

8. How long have you been natural?
RS: My senior year in high school I kind of played with going natural. I didn’t have a perm but I was still getting my hair pressed. In my first year of undergrad, I went completely natural; I gave up the press and curl. I braided my hair for a while then I went through a period where I just didn’t comb my hair at all and my own rebellion against society and physical judgment. Then I had a big Afro then I progressed into growing loc’s. Loc’s aren’t really for everyone, hell natural hair may not be for everyone but I can’t imagine myself with out them. Hair is significant and insignificant all at the same time. If some one was to pull one of my strains of hair, that one strain of hair would tell you who my ancestors are, what tribes I belong to, what I’ve eaten, if I’ve done any drugs, if I’ve been under stress. In a sense our hair is who we are. But then if you cut all the hair on body off it will grow back. Not a big deal right! I don’t knock how anyone chooses to express themselves. Everyone has a right to express themselves freely. It’s important that we don’t become oppressed with our free expression. You know?

9. Were your family members supportive of your book? And going natural?

RS: My family was very supportive of my writing the book. I would say I am a one woman team but my family has put in a lot of work with helping organizing events and helping move the books out of my apartment. However, when I decided to go natural there were a lot of jokes and a lot of ‘what are we going to do with your hair’. I am talking about people in my immediate community. I think Africans in American are very much assimilated in to European culture much more than ever in history. So there is still a lot of back lash for identifying too strongly with Africa. I have a shirt that says ‘I love Black people’ and Black people would tell me they are offend, go figure. Everyone talks about multiculturalism as long as you’re not too African, you could have loc’s but keep them neat and don’t wear red, black and green. I have you noticed that anything remotely Black is considered ghetto ignorant and poor. As Africans in American we strongly try to identify with everything out side of Blackness. Its real deep I could go on for hours about it. But to answer your question many people feel some kind of way about my hair, I am guess they got over it or they just keep their comments to them selves. I don’t twist my hair unless I feel like it and I died it red because I had a dream. So there you go.

10. How have you been able to make it through life using your own coping methods?
RS: I am a writer. So if there are situations that I find difficult I write about it I have a lot of notebook and journals where I am bitching or crying or whatever. And within the last year I’ve been doing a lot of painting. I think painting complements writing very well. I use to do a lot of talking but really no one wants to hear the problems of an unemployed writer having an issue with character development. A lot of your struggles are meant to be our struggles. I think the Most High gives them to us to figure out and grow from, that’s why sometime we find ourselves in the same situation, and we are so resistant to growth through struggle

11. How does it feel to work for you?
RS: Ah it’s been really interesting. A large part of my life I have been told when to wake up, when to report somewhere, when to turn something in. But as a writer, I had to really develop self motivation. No one is going to be upset of I don’t write a word for a whole month or do nothing to promote the book. But I will be upset and in conflict. So to keep myself sane and balanced I have to work on these things. I typically don’t go to sleep until 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning and I watch up around noon. I paint before I write sometimes or I dance around in my apartment or sing really loud or meditate or whatever I feel. I had to find what works for me and different things work for different people. Since I’ve been working for myself I have development my own process for productivity so to speak.

Is there any thing else you would like to add?
RS Thank you so much for interviewing me. I don’t really know what else to say but thank you and peace and blessing to everyone who reads this and find what I have to say interesting.

My Wonder Woman Bracelets

Please see my mini interview with Pura Body Naturals I did a product review of her products a few months ago please enjoy. Also  pura Body Naturals will have a give away(See side notes)

1. How did you get started?
I really all began with my skin in 2007. I’ve always suffered from eczema and severely dry skin which needed steroid creams to remain under control. After numerous expensive visits to the dermatologist, I finally visited a holistic doctor who suggested I try some natural soaps and oils on my skin. I immediately went to the herb shop and realized there was a world of natural oils and plant products that were very beneficial to the skin. I started using the natural products on my skin and they worked miracles. My skin was no longer dry, itchy, and irritated all of the time once I started using natural products. Fast forward to 2008 I realized I had a complete “lab” of oils and butters because once I starting researching ingredients I would buy various ingredients to make my special concoctions. The hair care products were birthed around that time when I decided to actually keep my hair curly instead of straightening with ceramic irons so much. I realized my curly hair was a lot different from my hair that was straightened with ceramic irons. My curly hair seemed to be dry, hard, and wouldn’t retain moisture. To make matters worse, my stylist was no longer working at the salon after having her baby. At that point I realized I didn’t know how to care for my own hair. I went through the product junkie phase which only resulted in me wearing wigs or braids a lot because my hair was a mess even with the commercial products. Nothing ever gave me results for more than 2-3 days.

One day I just happen to take a class on how to make natural butters and lotions for the skin because I still have all of these ingredients that I have to do something with. After taking the class I discovered the link between skin and hair; what makes my skin soft would more than likely make my hair soft because of the triglyceride levels in oils. I would experiment with my ingredients at home, but by this time I was very intrigued by handmade hair care products from many small companies. I ordered from many of the small natural hair care companies and often enjoyed the results with the exception of none I tried would provide my hair with enough moisture.

I decided to take an assessment of my hair because I knew I wanted to use natural ingredients, I just needed to figure out what worked for my hair. I started taking notes on what my hair didn’t respond well to; mainly studying the ingredients in the products. Once I realized the ingredients my hair didn’t like I started researching ingredients to find something my hair might like. After a year of experimenting I finally found Amazonian butter and oils and started mixing them into my concoctions. To my surprise they worked better than anything I’d tried in the past.

At that point I had body and hair products; at the same time I learned to hand craft mineral make-up as well. From there the concept of the company was birthed.

2. Tell the readers a little bite about your self?
I grew up watching my mother craft things so I think it's only natural I picked up on some of her talents. Oddly growing up I really didn't utilize my creative side. My career path in life lead me to be a special education teacher because of my love for kids. I guess you can call my product line is my hobby that evolved into a business.

3. When did you start your business?
I officially incorporated the business in 2010, but I've been making products for family and friends for a few years. After everyone enjoyed the products so much I decided to share my creations with the world.

Ryan Leslie " I choose you"

Products: Bath salts, scrubs, hair oil, butters, creams, shampoo bars, soap bars and more!
Simply Love-Leigh, LLC was establish in 2010 based on the love that I have for healthy hair and skin.
Why did you choose the name Simply Love-Leigh?
I chose Simply Love-Leigh because it describes me and the joy that I have for creating new products.Simply means* to be clear and visible; without complexity
Love means *unconditional, strong emotions for a person, place or thing
Leigh means* from the meadow and it is also one of my grandmother's name.

What motivated you to start your own natural line?Well to be honest, I would have never thought that I would have started any type of business. But with that being said HERE I AM! I have been making my own oils and butters for a few years.
In 2009 I was rear ended twice in one week and I was left with nerve damage, back injuries, arm and wrist complications. It is a miracle that I am still here this day. December 2009 was a rough time for me, my grandfather had passed, I was extremely overwhelmed with school and therapy. I didn't trust anyone but my mom to help me with my hair so out of frustration, I decided to slap a relaxer in after being natural for 2 years and 7 months. I only allowed the relaxer to stay in for about 5 minutes
within a week my scalp was on fire and that's when I decided to transition again and use my own products . I made products based off of what my hair was demanding. I started to share my products with family/friends and I thought why not share with everyone???In August of 2010, I filed for my business licence, the LLC, and started my website.

What are Simply Love-Leigh's goals? My goals are to simply keep helping people care for their hair and skin. It is my goal to provide the best customer service because I LOVE WHAT I  DO.

What is the best thing about having your own business?Being able to provide a product for my customers and to make sure they are satisfied with their products.

Tell us a about your product line? My product line thus far consist of hair/skin butters, salt scrubs, sugar glazes, lip balms, scalp oils, and bath oils.I use 100% natural ingredients .
Who is your natural hair inspiration? celebrities: Erykah Badu! She definitely does what she wants with her hair. I also like Jurnee Smollett, Jill Scott, Leela James, and India Arie.As far as natural hair anyone who is willing to wear their natural hair: curly, braided, straight, etc. I am inspired by naturals who are comfortable with themselves and their natural hair no matter what style they choose to rock!

What are some beauty secrets you can share?Don't try every product that people on hair boards rave about. Figure out what your hair needs.
What makes your products above the rest?
I make custom orders based on the needs of my customers not based on what will sell. When you simply enjoy what you are doing, you strive to deliver a great product.
What is your current career? I would love to become a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner one day but for now I am enjoying nursing school :)
What do you love about  being natural?Simply being me! Curly, Straight, Kinky, Braided, etc....just being me and loving who I am.

How did your family feel about you going natural? My family was not supportive and I was constantly reminded of how my hair wasn't as nice as theirs. I honestly didn't care what they thought. After I did the big chop the first time and my hair grew to MBL, everyone was shocked! Healthy hair and technique is what matters. Now some of my family are using my products and asking me for advice!
What can we expect to see from your product line soon? I am currently working on a deep conditioner, soy candles, hair gel, body wash and lip gloss!

I would just like to add that I will continue to offer good customer service and good products to everyone so expect more from Simply Love-Leigh!

NATURAL BEAUTY OF THE MONTH
Elaine is my natural Beauty of the month and she is the CEO and founder of Atlanta Natural Hair Care she can be reached at 404.277.5211. The physical address is 85 Fifth Street Suite D-115 Atlanta, Georgia 30308 please following along with the interview so that you can get to know her better.

1. Where did you get the name Atlanta Natural Hair Care from?

Atlanta Natural Hair Care was just a logical name for what I wanted my network to represent. I am a large proponent of both natural hair care and supporting the community in which one lives.

2. Where did you get the motivation from to start the social Networking site?http://AtlantaNaturalHair.com/profile/Elaine

I just wanted to share with other women what I knew about having natural hair.
I initially thought about writing a blog, but I soon realized that there are
already a wealth amount of blogs. Therefore, I thought it would more
useful to create an online community that could direct others to all of the wonderful blogs that already exist.

3. How did you get started?I was familiar with Ning.com, a formerly free website for creating online communities. I utilized Ning to start Atlanta Natural Hair Care

4. Can you tell the readers a little about yourself?I was able to leave the construction industry after working in commercial construction for over 10 years to pursue a life in the natural hair care industry. Natural hair care is something I am passionate about. My former boss is one of my
greatest inspirations. He has  passion for construction and showed me that anything is possible if you understand what resources you have available.
5. How long have you been natural and why did you choose to go natural?I have been natural for about 15 years. I decided to grow out my relaxer because it was no longer geographically convenient to go to the stylist that had taken care of my hair from the time I was twelve through adulthood. I was not going to trust anyone else to chemically straighten my hair. I utilized braid extensions for my transition. After about a year of braids I had my relaxed hair cut off and wore an Afro and other natural styles for about five years. When I was pregnant with my now nine year old son I utilized individual two strand twists to begin my locs.

6. What was your career choice before Atlanta Natural Hair Care?My background is Construction Management. I graduated from Georgia Tech with an Architecture degree.

7. What are a few of your natural beauty secrets? My best hair tip is to drink plenty of water (it’s good for your skin too). Other than that, my routine is simple. I wash and condition my hair about once a week with Aubrey Organics J.A.Y. Shampoo and Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner. I twist my hair after washing and conditioning. I use oil to twist my hair. I am currently using and loving Beauty and Glory's Sunshine Oil for twisting my hair. I do not use any creams or butters in my hair. I spray water or a leave in conditioner in my hair once or twice in between washings for moisture. Most mornings I just wake up and go.

8. What are your goals as owner of Atlanta Natural Hair Care?My goal is for Atlanta Natural Hair Care to a be a part of the growth and development of Atlanta's Natural Hair Care Industry. Consumers need to be educated about what to expect from natural hair care products and services and professionals need to be held accountable. Atlanta Natural Hair Care works everyday to connect consumers with professionals that respect the consumers natural hair care needs. Atlanta Natural Hair Care also works to connect professionals with other professionals in order to build stronger Natural Hair Care Industry.

9. Tell us a little bit about what you do?AtlantaNaturalHair.com is an online natural hair care resource network with over 300 members both professional and nonprofessional with a variety natural hair care experiences. On AtlantaNaturalHair.com visitors and members can find listings of the following: upcoming events, salons, barbers, hair braiders, websites, and meet-up groups.

Atlanta Natural Hair Care, Inc. also conducts natural hair care specialty classes for cosmetology schools throughout the Atlanta area. We utilize professional cosmetologists that currently work in the natural hair care industry to perform demonstrations and talk to the students about the natural hair care industry as a viable choice after receipt of their cosmetology license.

10. Where are you located in Atlanta?Atlanta Natural Hair Care works throughout the Atlanta area, but our base location is in Midtown Atlanta.

11. How often do you attend natural Hair Seminars and events?Atlanta Natural has representatives at a minimum of one natural hair care event a week. On average we attend two to three events a week.

The key to natural beauty is good health. If you take care of your body it will reward you with natural beauty from hair to toe.

13. Who are your hair inspirations? I believe Lauryn Hill was my first hair inspiration. Lauryn Hill was smart, successful, and beautiful but not in a traditional sense. Even though her style was unique her beauty was apparent universally.

14. What advice do your have for newbie’s that are thinking of going natural? You must Understand what resources you have available, how to utilize them, Then just do it!!!

15. Have you ever had a natural hair disaster?Yes. In the past, on more than one occasion, I've gone over month without twisting my hair. Not only was it hard to separate and twist after a month my locs seemed weaker and thinner at the roots.

16. When was your last relaxer or have you ever had one?My last relaxer was in 1996.

17. What is the hardest part about owning your own business? For me the hardest part of owning my own business is the financial irregularity. With a traditional job the paychecks are steady and there are no surprise business expenses.

18. What are you most proud of in having your own business and being a black
woman?I am most proud of the fact that I was able to come up with and execute a
business idea that others see as valuable.

19. How long have you been in business?
Atlanta Natural Hair Care is young our strength lies in the fact that we are
able to work with established successful natural hair professionals. Atlanta Natural Hair Care's online network was created in June of 2009. Atlanta Natural Hair Care, Inc. it was officially launched in July of
2010.

20. What advice can you give to young business owners just starting out?
Being a young business owner myself, I can share some advice that I have been
given: Be aware of your strengths and weaknesses. If you’re weak in an area
educate yourself. You do not have to be an expert. You can hire an expert.
You do however; want to know enough so that others cannot easily take advantage
of you.

21. Do you have anything you would like to add?I just want to say thank you for letting me be a part of your natural hair journey.

I would like to Thank Elaine for taking the time to interview with me and sharing with all my readers about her business and her natural hair journey.

MY BOOK REVIEW

The book that I am reviewing is "Thank God I am Natural by: Chris Tia Donaldson. She is a Harvard graduate with a true passion for hair. By day she is a successful lawyer for a software company,by night she is a freelance writer and entrepreneur looking to launch her own natural hair product line.

This book was an eye opener and I learned so much about being natural. Although I have been for a year now I am still in the learning process. In chapter 2 she talks about Myths and Misconceptions a  myth that I believed before going natural was  myth #2 Natural hair is unmanageable this was my thought for a very long time. This myth was one of the reasons it took me years to finally go natural.

My hair dresser at the time told me you should not go natural  because your hair is to thick it would not look good on you. MYTH I LOOK GREAT. In Chapter 2 she talks about many other myths that are very helpful. In Chapter 5 she talks about the "Andre Walker System" which details your hair type in going natural you will need to type your hair for many reasons.

Chris Tia Donaldson
Also in Chapter 5 she talks about the dangers of relaxers and how safe they are not for your hair. She also talks about transitioning from relaxer to natural and how to maintain it, though out the book she shows different natural hair styles that you can wear that are very professional.
This was yet again other myth that I choose to believe is that natural hair is not professional, and this is so far from the truth.

She also gives you great information as a newbie which is read the labels of every thing that you put in your hair and just because it says it is what is, it still may not be that .
The last Chapter I would like to share with you is chapter 15 In the kitchen making products at home. This is my favorite chapter because she gives you in detail every ingredient needed to make shampoos, conditions and so much more.

This has been one of the best natural hair books that I have read thus far and I recommend this book to all naturals weather you have been natural for 6 months to 6 years because this is great information that you will need though out your entire natural journey. I would like to say thanks to Chris Tia for sending me a copy of this amazing book and to allow me to review it. Thanks and I am looking forward to your natural product line naturally kinky tresses that will be out soon.
Happy to be Nappy

Pura Body Naturals Review

I would like to do my very first review on a new product that I have been using for the  past month on my hair. I would first like to share with you the event in which I discovered the product. I went to a Natural beauty launching event on June 19,2010 in Atlanta Ga at this event  is where  Santeyonne Powell the creator of the product launched her  new natural product line. The product that I am speaking of is the Cupuacu Hair butter this is not her only product but this was the purchase that I made. This is the best hair butter  that I have yet to say that yes I love. I am in love with  the smell the feel and I really love how it  makes my  hair feel. I use this product for my twist and braid outs I am going to have to place other order because as of right now I am almost out. If you find you are interested in trying her new product please visit her face book  page at (Facebbook)http://www.facebook.com and you can also visit her blog at http://purabodynaturals.blogspot.com/. Please see to right a picture of Santeyonne at her
event, I would also like to share with you more information about the Cupuacu Hair Butter
as it was given to clients from the creator so that we understood what we were putting in our hair.Cupuacu Hair Butter-  Apply to wet or dry hair for softness and sheen; making sure to apply from root to end. apply the butter after conditioning hair to seal it and proceed to twist. Amazingly cupuacu has a tremendous capacity for water absorption which provides moisturizing benefits. It can be applied to dry hair as well. It's great for dry, coarse, brittle hair as well as natural or relaxed hair. All of the information about the butter is on Santeyonne's blog as well.
The picture to the left is a picture of a few ladies from the Naturally Fierce hair group. I hope that you have enjoyed my review please look for my August Natural Beauty of month. Thank you for your support and  remember to let your Natural Beauty shine.

Why did you choose to go natural? I wanted dreadlocks

Who or what was your inspiration? no one

Any advice for newbies? HAVE PATIENCE, it takes a loooooonnnnnngggggg time

Any myths about dreads you'd like to talk about?  It's easier to maintain than permed hair

Where do you get your dreads done?stylist? in between places now; used to have dedicated person; not anymore

Do you think natural is cheaper then relaxed? Or about the same? about the same

Do you have family that oppose your decision to go natural? no, but if I did, it wouldn't matter.

What does your husband think? He loves them and only ask that I keep them long!

Do you any insecurity in going in for a corp interview? not anymore; I used to when it was at the in between stage.

Tell me why you are so confident with your natural? because it's my hair and I love the style and length!
